Saltwater Fly Fishing

pollack-on-flyFor you fly fishermen out there, have you tried Saltwater Fly Fishing? One of the fastest growing disciplines in fishing today. Fly fishing in the sea does raise the occasional eyebrow, but until you’ve felt a Pollack diving for the kelp and the only thing you have to stop it is the silly little piece of carbon fibre in your hand, which is bending at alarming angles…Well, thrilling is probably the best way to describe it!

Most #7, 8 and 9 rods are capable along with ideally a fast sinking line, though an intermediate does catch fish. We do have a small stock of suitable rods, reels and lines. The flies, we tie ourselves, but for those wishing to tie their own, we tend to use a size 2-4 Carp hook, and then take your pick with the colour, we have caught fish on white, blue, green , olive, yellow, orange, black and even pink flies. Below is a dressing for one of our successful fly pattern.

Saltwater FlyHook: 2-4 carp hook, we tend to use E.S.P Raptor carp hooks.

Under wing: Buck Tail in White.

Wing: Day Glo in Orange

Over wing: A few strands of Crystal Flash in silver or gold.

Eyes: Bead eyes tied in before whip finishing the pattern.

Don’t wind the thread down the entire length of the hook, just wind enough on to tie in the different wings and the bead eyes.
